We are proud to announce our students and teacher of the month for October!

Our teacher of the month is Ms. Olivia Brown! According to the teacher who nominated her, "Mrs. Brown is always involved with everything. She did a great job with our Trunk or Treat celebration, and she is always willing to help any teacher and has great leadership in our professional learning community meetings."

The freshman student of the month is Jose Rodriguez. His teacher said he is respectable, accountable, empathetic, and completes all assignments. He has an A in ELA, math, science, and social studies! He is a great student!

Chloe Brown is our 10th grade student of the month. Chloe's teacher said she is outstanding when it comes to academics and extracurricular activities. She is taking concurrent college credit, playing basketball, making straight As, and is always polite, kind, and helpful to others.

Our 11th grade student of the month is Kayla Jordan. According to her teacher, she is a hard-working student who does a great job both academically and extracurricularly. She is an outstanding student who is kind, hard-working, and dedicated.

Madison Bowman is the senior voted as student of the month. Her teacher raved about her saying she has gone above and beyond in the welding program. She has put in extra time on two saturdays to hone her skills in the FCAW process and entered a welding competition dominated by male students. She did everything it takes to go that extra mile and to face her fears to get what she wants a young adult and has set and achieved her goals in the welding class.

We are thankful for Comets like these!

Mills University Studies High School is very proud to announce that two of our very own teachers, Ms. Foote and Ms. Prewett, have just been announced as National Board Certified teachers! Only about 3% of teachers in the United States hold this prestigious certification.

Established in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonprofit organization working to advance accomplished teaching for all students.

The founding mission of the National Board is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by:

* Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do;
* Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards;
* Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.

It takes a great deal of hard work and time to achieve this accomplishment, so please be sure to congratulate them on this honor!

Ms. Foote and Ms. Prewett are masterful teachers, and we are so thankful that they are Comets!!!

✨ ’Twas the night before AVID Wednesday,
and all through the halls,
students prepped their shirts
to answer future calls. 🎓

👕Tomorrow, if your school doesn't already have spirit day, wear AVID with a college or career shirt to match the ambition you put into education, just like Joe T. Robinson High School and Sherwood Elementary last week!📚 #AVID #PCSSDproud #ServeAll

Students in Mr. Thompson's anatomy & physiology classes have recently been dissecting pigs in order to better understand their structures and functions. Students had to work cooperatively to first explore the exterior portions of the pig cadavers and then they began dissections in order to note the interior systems such as digestive, circulatory, and respiratory.

One challenge of this hands-on approach to teaching mammalian anatomy was to remove the brain undamaged so that it could then be dissected in another lab. You can see several students were able to successfully meet this goal.

Recently MUSH art teachers submitted student works to the Arkansas Art Educators of Arkansas Regional Art Show, and they won numerous awards! They even SWEPT first place for all four high school grade levels!

Mr. Bean and Ms. Young were asked to submit exemplary pieces of artwork created by students in their classrooms. A variety of two-dimensional projects ranging from painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, mixed media and computer generated work were judged. Our winners were as follows:

John Blakely 1st Place 9th Grade (self portrait in pencil)
Daniel Miranda 1st Place 10th Grade (still life in charcoal)
Eduardo Rodriguez-Garcia 10th Grade 2nd Place (self portrait in pencil)
Eric Jaime 10th Grade 3rd Place (still life in charcoal)
Sidney Leeper 11th Grade 1st Place (self portrait in pencil)
Alyson Tinsley 12th grade 1st Place (still life in charcoal)
Hayden McNutt 12th Grade 3rd Place (goldfish in watercolor)

These pieces will be on display from June-August at the Hillary Clinton Children's Library here in Little Rock, and an awards ceremony will be forthcoming, so be looking for more on these honors.

We are so proud of these students and their teachers for working hard and submitted their work to competition.

Believe it or not, this school year is almost halfway over! Our semester exams begin this Friday, December 12th and continue through Wednesday, December 17th. All make-up tests will be given on the 18th and 19th. Attached is the schedule for those days.

Dr. Varnell recently visited 9th grade physical science classes at Mills University Studies High School. He demonstrated the “Chemistry in a Bag” activity where he combined calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and an indicator (phenolphthalein) inside a ziplock bag. The reaction produced carbon dioxide gas, water, and calcium carbonate (chalk). As the reaction progressed, the bag swelled due to the carbon dioxide gas. The mixture also changed from white to a pinkish-red color because of the phenolphthalein indicator, showing that the solution had become alkaline.

The safety of our students, teachers, and staff is always the first priority, so PCSSD will have a delayed start on Tuesday, December 2, for schools and district offices. Buses will run two hours later than their normal scheduled time. Tardies will not be counted for the day.
